On-going Training is offered through each Regional Youth Service's office. An annual calendar of training opportunities is distributed to each foster family. Agency staff and/or outside professionals conduct the training sessions and speak on topics suggested by foster parents or topics the staff deem beneficial to working with special needs children.
Each foster parent must earn 20 hours of On-going Training annually. Of these 20 hours, a minimum of 12 hours must be earned by attending trainings provided by Regional Youth Services. The other 8 hours may come from alternative sources such as books, videos, and other audio tapes approved by the state. Each office has a library of resources available to families. Families may also attend pre-approved trainings offered by community agencies or institutions if it is deemed the topics are beneficial to foster parenting and caring for children. Online Training is also available to foster parents and may be used for alternative training credit. These Web sites are www.fosterparents.com and www.fosterparentcollege.com .
